چکیده
The performance of second-order symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) calculations using Kohn-Sham (KS) orbitals is evaluated against benchmark results for intermolecular interactions. Unlike previous studies of this "SAPT(KS)" methodology, the present study uses non-empirically tuned long-range corrected (LRC) functionals for the monomers. The proper v xc (r)→0 asymptotic limit is achieved by tuning the range separation parameter in order to satisfy the condition that the highest occupied KS energy level equals minus the molecule's ionization energy, for each monomer unit. Tests for He2, Ne2, and the S22 and S66 data sets reveal that this condition is important for accurate prediction of the non-dispersion components of the energy, although errors in SAPT(KS) dispersion energies remain unacceptably large. In conjunction with an empirical dispersion potential, however, the SAPT(KS) method affords good results for S22 and S66, and also accurately predicts the whole potential energy curve for the sandwich isomer of the benzene dimer. Tuned LRC functionals represent an attractive alternative to other asymptotic corrections that have been employed in density-functional-based SAPT calculations, and we recommend the use of tuned LRC functionals in both coupled-perturbed SAPT(DFT) calculations and dispersion-corrected SAPT(KS) calculations.

State Energy Functionals and Variational Equations in Density Functional Theory
In two recent papers [1,2] we have presented significant portions of an effort to provide a comprehensive mathematical basis for Density Functional Theory. The aim is to be both formally sound and to provide a structural framework for the development of improved approximations. The earlier paper addressed the relationship between symmetry breaking in Kohn-Sham solutions and the essential struct...
متن کاملLondon dispersion forces by range separated hybrid density functional with second order perturbational corrections (RSH+MP2): the case of rare gas complexes
A satisfactory account of the van der Waals (London dispersion) forces is, in general, not possible by the Kohn-Sham method using standard local, semi-local GGA or meta-GGA density functionals. The recently proposed range-separated hybrid (RSH) approach, supplemented by second order perturbational corrections (MP2) to include long range dynamic correlation effects offers a physically consistent...
متن کاملNuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts with the statistical average of orbital-dependent model potentials in Kohn–Sham density functional theory
In this paper, an orbital-dependent Kohn–Sham exchange-correlation potential, the so-called statistical average of ~model! orbital potentials, is applied to the calculation of nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts of a series of simple molecules containing H, C, N, O, and F. It is shown that the use of this model potential leads to isotropic chemical shifts which are substantially improved...
متن کاملSemiempirical double-hybrid density functional with improved description of long-range correlation.
The recently proposed new family of "double-hybrid" density functionals [Grimme, S. J. Chem. Phys. 2006, 124, 34108] replaces a fraction of the semi-local correlation energy by a non-local correlation energy expression that employs the Kohn-Sham orbitals in second-order many-body perturbation theory. These functionals have provided results of high accuracy over a wide range of properties but fa...
متن کاملBrueckner Orbitals and Density-Functional Theory
By means of Many-Body Perturbation Theory (MBPT) it is shown that minimizing the energy expectation value of a closed-shell system in a certain order of the preturbation expansion by varying the partitioning of the Hamiltonian, leads to a zeroth-order function, which – as the order of perturbation increases and provided the expansion converges properly – approaches a determinant of Brueckner or...
